WHAT WE DO

What is cyber risk management?

Cyber risk management is the process of identifying the information assets your business relies on, assessing the threats and vulnerabilities that affect them, and implementing controls that reduce risk to an acceptable level.
It sits at the heart of ISO 27001, and it forms a core part of a credible UK GDPR compliance programme. Businesses that manage cyber risk systematically are better placed to prevent incidents, respond quickly when they occur, and demonstrate to clients and regulators that they take information security seriously.
WHY IT MATTERS

UK GDPR and cyber security

UK GDPR requires organisations to implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal data. Cyber security controls, such as firewalls, access management, encryption, patch management and incident response, are those technical measures. Weak cyber security is not a separate issue from GDPR non-compliance. In most cases, they are the same issue.
A cyber incident that results in personal data being lost, stolen or accessed without authorisation is likely to be reportable to the ICO within 72 hours. If it affects a large number of individuals, or involves sensitive categories of data, those individuals may also need to be notified directly. Late or inadequate reporting carries the risk of fines, enforcement notices and reputational damage that can be difficult to recover from.
AVOIDING FINES

ICO enforcement and fines

The Information Commissioner's Office can issue fines of up to £17.5 million or 4% of global annual turnover for serious infringements of UK GDPR. For smaller businesses, the reputational and contractual consequences of a reported breach often matter more than the fine itself. Clients withdraw. Contracts are lost. Relationships that took years to build are damaged in days.
DPO SUPPORT

Virtual Data Protection Officer support

Many businesses need access to data protection expertise without the cost of a full-time Data Protection Officer. The Rybec Group provides virtual DPO support: someone who can give informed advice on data protection questions, review your processing activities, handle subject access requests and represent the business in dealings with the ICO. Available when you need them, without the overhead of a permanent hire.

Policies, risk assessments and governance documentation

Having cyber controls in place is one thing. Being able to evidence them to a client, a procurement team or a regulator is another. The Rybec Group helps businesses develop the documentation they need to demonstrate compliance, including:
Information security policies
Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs)
Records of processing activities
Supplier and third-party assessment frameworks
Incident response plans
Data breach response procedures
